Southern New Hampshire University's Department of Computing Resources is currently in the process of upgrading and consolidating its current email systems with the ultimate goal of improving the quality of email service provided to faculty, staff, and students.
This upgrade will bring a new Microsoft Exchange email system online and will culminate in the coming weeks with the decommissioning of the Cerberus and Rhea email systems with which you may be familiar. Any mail that you currently have on Rhea or Cerberus will be copied to the new Exchange system.
The new Microsoft Exchange email system will provide improved stability and performance as well as enhanced features such as calendar sharing, meeting scheduling, out of office assistant, web access, and a global address book.
The new Microsoft Exchange email system will be available for use by the campus community on Wednesday, July 23rd. As of this date all email will flow through the new system and the Cerberus and Rhea systems will no longer send or receive mail. This transition does not affect the Distance Education email system which can be identified by email addresses ending in "@minerva.snhu.edu". The transition will be completed over the following week as many PCs on campus and at CE Centers will need to receive software upgrades.
On July 23rd you must begin using the new email system in order to send and receive email. If you do not use the new email system you will not get mail. Additionally, any email address ending in "@nhc.edu" will no longer work. This means that any mail being sent to your old "@nhc.edu" email address will be undeliverable.
Please review the following points and directions so that you will be functional on the 23rd.
1) There are only two ways that you can receive email. You can use Microsoft Outlook or you can access your mail via the web. You cannot use Netscape, Eudora, Outlook Express, or any other email application. They will not work with the new system.
2) All computers on campus have Outlook but, as was outlined in the July 15th email from Computing Resources, many need to have software upgrades for Outlook to be functional. If your computer needs these upgrades you can still access and send mail via the web. Directions are below.
3) Follow the directions below for email setup. Remember that Computing Resources staff will be visiting offices on Wednesday, July 23rd to install updates. If you need immediate assistance with setup you can call the help desk at extension 4357.
The quickest and easiest way to access your email is by using Outlook Web Access which gives you access to all of your email tools on the web. To access your email on the web, open Internet Explorer and go to http://webmail.snhu.edu.
You will be prompted to enter your
username. Your username is your email address. (example:
j.doe@snhu.edu for faculty/staf or
john.doe@snhu.edu for students)
You will then be prompted to enter your
password. Your password is your date of birth (MMDDYYYY).
For example - if your date of birth is April 15, 1967 your password would be
04151967. If you
are unable to login with your date of birth as the password, please contact
the Help Desk at extension 4357. Note: Old (existing) passwords
will not work! It is recommended that you change your password using the
instructions below.
Please note - you may be asked to log in twice. Once you access Outlook Web Access for the first time bookmark the page. This will prevent you from having to log into the system two times in the future.
Your ability to setup Outlook on your PC depends on whether you have received the upgrades mentioned above or not. Please note that you will only be able to use Outlook while on campus. When off campus you must use Outlook Web Access.
If you have Office XP installed on your PC you may be able to setup your new email account on your own. If you have Office 2000 or an even earlier version you will not be able to setup Outlook and will need to use Outlook Web Access until Computing Resources staff can visit you.
If you have Office XP please feel free to use the demonstration movie and instructions provided here. Not sure which version of Office you have? Click here
Computing Resources recommends that you change your email password as soon as possible on or after July 23rd. This will ensure that your email is secure and that you are the only person that can access it.
